Summary

As Adam and Eve's family grew, so did the wickedness in their hearts. God saw there a came a point when their every thought was toward evil. In other words, they had very bad attitudes, and it grieved His heart.

God said He would destroy His entire creation, but He decided to spare Noah and his family. He told Noah to build a big boat called an ark, and He sent two of every kind of animal to Noah. Noah and his family along with those animals lived on the ark about one year while the flood waters came and receded. After the flood, Noah built an alter and worshiped God. God promised never to flood the earth again and told Noah and his family they could eat meat as well as plants.

He also told them to fill the earth. Instead, Noah's descendants decided to build a name for themselves and a tower to reach heaven...so they would not be scattered across the earth like God had told them. God caused the people to speak different languages so they could not understand each other. In essence, they became babbling builders who could not understand each other. As a result, they spread out across the earth like He told them.

The rest of scripture details God's calling and setting aside of one people through whom He would reveal Himself more fully to the rest of humanity. The Bible from A to Z as we watch the plan of redemption unfold.

Jesus in the Account

Genesis 6:16

There was one door in the ark just as there is One Way to fellowship with God - John 14:6.

His second coming

Jesus said His second coming will happen like the flood - completely unexpected - Luke 17:20-37.

The division of languages, Pentecost, and Heaven

The division of languages at the Tower of Babel was somewhat "reversed" as Pentecost when everyone could understand the disciples in their own language. The division will be completely removed in Zion when people from "every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation" sing a new song before the Throne! (Revelation 5:9)

Did You Know?

Flood and the separation of languages myths or stories are found in cultures all over the earth.

Most cultures or people groups have a story of a great flood. Many also have a story of the time everyone spoke one language until their languages were divided.

The flood can account for the huge fossil beds found today.

Fossils are formed by rapid burial of a living or recently dead organism such as would have happened in the flood.

The flood can account for the vast geological features of the earth.

Moving water can, well, move mountains. If you live on a dirt road, you know one good rain storm can wash away a complete section in hours. Flooding rivers and mud slides wash away buildings. Imagine the power of enough water to cover all the earth. Enough rapid moving water such as what would have been upon the earth at the time of the flood could have caused canyons, caves, rocks sitting on pedestals, and many other geological features we find today.

Volcanoes give us a small glimpse of what may have happened when the "fountains of the deep" broke open at the beginning of the flood. (Genesis 7:11).

Scientist had long held things such as fossils and petrified wood took years - often millions of years - to form. The 1980 eruption of Mount St. Helens gave scientist a modern day opportunity to study the effects of a volcano. What they found proved many process they once thought took millions of years to happen can happen in a matter of seconds or over just a couple of years.

The flood can account for the Ice Age.

The ash from the eruption of Mount St. Helens caused a blackout in Spokane 250 miles away and traveled around the whole earth in two weeks. Data shows such ash can cool the earth's temperatures. Again, imagine what the ash from the "fountains of the deep" could do to global temperatures.

The word used for "bow" in Genesis 9:13 (I set my bow in the cloud) is the word for weapon.

God hung up His weapon against the Earth and promised never to flood it again.

The languages of the earth do not come from one common language.

Linguist combine languages into families. They can only combine languages so far until they reach a point where there are no similarities. Such a fact supports the Biblical account for the division of languages at the Tower of Babel.

Researchers have found nearly every one of the names in the Table of Nations listed in Genesis 10 in ancient documents.

Being able to find evidence of or reference to every name in an ancient document is not common. Let alone finding almost 70 names! Just more proof the Bible is factual.
